I've only used electric shavers for about 30 years, and my last three were all Brauns.They consistently give the closest shave I've ever received, and they last for years. The foil head, the "power comb", and especially the pivoting head combine to work exceptionally well. I highly recommend any of their shavers.However...

This is the first time I've purchased one with the Clean & Renew base, and honestly, I'd recommend purchasing a model without it. The base station unit adds a lot to the price, and I don't think it adds that much value. In addition, the base and power cord are very poorly designed. The plug on the end of the cord is huge and juts straight out from the wall, getting in the way and taking up a lot of counter space unnecessarily.A right-angle plug (like the ones on every 20-dollar hair dryer) would be much better. The other end of the cord is just as bad! The connection to the base station sits at an odd angle, sticking out from the side and making it almost impossible to sit the station against a wall.

One other power-cord-related issue: this shaver comes with a protective travel case, but the case ONLY holds the shaver... the cord can't fit with it! You have to pack the cord separately.Not a big deal, but it just seems like an obvious oversight.

All in all, the shaver itself is terrific, but if you're strapped for counter space near your bathroom sink, I'd look for one of Braun's units with the swiveling head and not the Clean & Renew base.

(More customer reviews)Over the past twenty years I have owned at least 6 Braun electric razors. All past Braun razors worked fine so I had the expectation that the recently purchased Braun razor would be satisfactory -- but it is not! Either I got a lemon or Braun has lowered its manufacturing standards on their lower priced electric razors.
Problems: (1) my beard is not heavy, but it takes twice as long to shave as it did with my former Braun razor; (2) Moreover, the shave is unacceptable since the result of this Braun shave is a remaining rather rough, not smooth, beard. Repeated shaving over many areas do not do the job removing the stubble, particularly with respect to short hairs;(3) The side cutter is a "menace" -- I have drawn blood twice trying to use it; and (4) The razor did not come with a plastic "guard" over the cutter as all Braun razors did in my past experiences.
In summary, this Braun razor is a disappointment and I regret its purchase.

Braun Free Control 1775 Men's Shaver Review

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased the Braun Free Control #1775 electric shaver and I can honestly say that it shaves as close as my old reliable Gillette Sensor razor. I've tried other Braun models costing up to 5 times the price of the Free Control and none of them shaves as close. I think the secret is that is uses just one large cutting block which is heavier and closer cutting than those 2 headed models. Also, the floating foil head is MUCH THINNER than the more expensive Braun models. It floats up and down on your face, and the foil itself is very flexible so it compresses onto the cutter and you barely have to press the shaver to your face. For $35. this shaver out performs $150. models and is an unbelievable value. Don't waste your money on anything more expensive, they don't get any closer than this!!!
